The right-turn ban towards Winterbourne, along with the block on traffic crossing straight over from Frenchay, has been lifted after a long stretch of diversions.

The restriction was introduced in August 2019 as part of efforts to cut roadside nitrogen dioxide, and it reshaped journeys across the area for the best part of seven years. Now that the barriers are down, more direct routes are back on the table for anyone travelling between Filton, Frenchay, Downend and Winterbourne.

What the reopening actually means for drivers

The council has also reinstated the bus lane on the westbound ring road on either side of the traffic lights, so other traffic passing through is restricted to two lanes instead of three. In practice, that means quicker cross-town journeys for some, but also a period of adjustment as everyone relearns the junction layout, lane discipline and turning rules. Expect a few weeks of hesitant driving, sudden lane changes and closer-than-ideal following distances while local traffic patterns settle down.
